Up and Coming Residency Programs to Watch

We take a look back on the most recent and innovative movements in the world of art residencies, highlighting five of the best programs that launched in the past year.

Forge Project - Taghkanic, New York, USA

Located on the unceded lands of the Muh-he-con-ne-ok in New York state, Forge Project is led by and designed for indigenous artists. Decolonization, land rights and education are all at the center of the initiative’s funded fellowship program, with a collection of Indigenous artworks by living artists available to all residents as an important source of inspiration. The residency’s impressive state-of-the-art guesthouses were designed by Ai Weiwei in collaboration with HHF architects and work to emphasize the relationship between the built environment, the natural surroundings and the community that inhabits them.

Hayama Artist Residency - Hayama-machi, Japan

Hayama Artist Residency’s Founder and Director, Dexter Wimberly, suitably describes this new program as an opportunity for “awakening and opening new pathways” in a space that is both “tranquil and transformative”. Nestled in a serene peninsula facing the Pacific Ocean, Hayama Artist Residency acts as a bridge between international artists and Japanese culture. Besides providing round-trip flights, accommodation and a weekly stipend, the program culminates in a group exhibition in Tokyo that opens space for dialogue between the resident artists’ work and the vibrant local art scene.

Location: Hayama-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Duration of program: Four weeks

Art Explora x Cité internationale des arts - Paris, France

Another exciting fully-funded residency launched in the past year is the collaboration between Art Explora and Cité internationale des arts. The residency is open to artists and researchers from around the globe, opening the door to the undeniably rich Parisian world of art. There are two separate programs - the SOLO and DUO - for individual artists and collaborations between an artist and a researcher respectively. In both cases, the goal of the residency is to present work that concerns the most urgent current issues to the largest possible audience.

Duration of Program: Three or six months

TURN2 Residencies - Berlin, Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg

Cross-cultural collaboration between Africa and Germany is a core theme of the next artist residency to watch, TURN2 Residencies. In fact, this project is comprised of several interconnected residencies enabled by international partnership organizations; ZK/U Berlin, G.A.S in Lagos, Bag Factory in Johannesburg and NCAI Nairobi all come together to form the fabric of the program. Focusing on curatorial practices, TURN2 Residencies seeks to introduce its residents to vibrant local and global art scenes, broadening their networks and fostering professional exchange.

Connect - Switzerland, Chile, South Africa, Brazil and India

At the intersection of science and art, Connect is a collaboration between CERN and The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia that can truly call itself a global residency program. Connect is comprised of a number of residency opportunities that will be announced until 2024 at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland and at partner scientific organizations worldwide. Experimentation and the development of transdisciplinary work is at the core of the programs, which stimulate knowledge-sharing and exchange between artists and scientists. The first two fully-funded iterations of Connect are set to be launched in early 2022 and will be focused on immersing artists within the laboratory, and pushing them to integrate both physics and astronomy into their work.
