Isabella Shields

Director and Curator of 16 Nicholson Street Gallery

Isabella Shields is a guest curator of ArtConnect's Artists to Watch ‘22

Isabella Shields is director and curator of 16 Nicholson Street Gallery in Glasgow, having established the gallery and delivered interdisciplinary exhibitions and satellite events, and developed art publications at its helm since 2016.

Her current critical focus is on ethics in practices of self-representation across visual art and contemporary literature, with particular attention being given to ideas of confession, identification, and intimacy. Her work focuses on trauma theory, intermediality, and the dissolution of boundaries within culturally prominent media.

She is also a writer and PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh, where she is writing her thesis on ethics in contemporary women’s autotheory, and where she teaches Literary Studies. Both her critical work and creative writing has been published in academic journals, artbooks, and magazines. Her work-in-progress novel ‘A Common Spring’ was developed into a radio play for Radiophrenia in 2020.
