How I Found My First Artist Residency
(and What I’d Do Differently)
One artist shares what the application process really looked like, the mistakes they made, and what they wish they’d known earlier.
When I first applied for an artist residency, I had no idea what I was doing.
I spent weeks rewriting my bio, questioned every sentence of my statement, and stalked past residents on Instagram to see if I “fit the vibe.” I didn’t think I’d get in—but I did. And while it was absolutely worth it, there are a few things I wish someone had told me before I hit "submit."
You don’t have to be famous—just intentional
I assumed residencies were only for artists with major exhibitions or big-name degrees. But the truth is, most residencies are looking for artists with a clear practice and a reason for applying. Be honest, not flashy. Say why this place, why now.
You won’t finish a masterpiece
I thought I needed a big project idea. Instead, I arrived and realised the time was more about starting—reading, testing, failing. The biggest gift was space to think. If I could do it again, I’d frame my application around exploration, not outcomes.

The application itself teaches you something
The process of applying made me look harder at my work: what themes keep showing up? What do I actually want to make? Even if you don’t get in, treat the application as practice for articulating your practice.
Talk to past residents
Before applying again, I started messaging previous residents. Most were kind and honest—some told me the program wasn’t as advertised. That saved me time and money. Now I always try to pay that advice forward.

Don’t rush the timeline
I applied to six residencies in one month. I got one and never heard back from the others. Looking back, I would have taken more time tailoring each application instead of panic-sending the same statement to everyone.
Final thought
Finding your first residency isn’t about being “ready”—it’s about showing up with curiosity and a real reason to be there. You might be surprised who says yes.
✨ Thinking about applying for a residency?
It’s not just about the space—it’s about time to experiment, connect, and see your practice in a new light. Whether it’s your first or your fifth, the right residency can open unexpected doors.
