Nandan He

Nandan (Sam) He (1991) is a multimedia artist whose work mainly swing between interactive sculpture, mix media video/animation installation.

Most of Nandan’s work are multi disciplinary installations with underlying perception of misplaced cognitive illusion. It emerged into everyone’s odd phantasm and nihilistic belonging with consequences that unfolds alterations of predetermined values. By using cardboard, animation, video installation etc, she creates intimacy spaces like a self preservation solution, explore the rawness of a contemporary self and reveals an irrational order of a hyper normalized wonderland.

“Nandan He's videos and moving images work as archetypes and dreams that shape the artists' experience between reality and the subconscious. Delivered with witty humour and surreal aesthetics, her works point out stories from her imaginary worlds, alternative perspectives and real-life experiences, all blended masterfully within layered mixed media works mostly presented like abandoned theatre stages.

In the mixed-media installation titled 'The box inside my head volume No. 2', we see the artist wearing a black coverall jumpsuit and carrying a handcrafted box-shaped face instead of her head. We only witness a poker face while the artist herself stands - alone- inside a tiny version of her surroundings accompanied by an empty notebook, a bottle of vodka, a phone and a pot. This recently made work could also be an antiphon to our recent experiences during lockdowns and restrictions as one can be isolated, alone with oneself even when they are physically next to others considering the change of everyday interactions within the last years. We all had to redefine our social interactions and what socialising means by looking into digital screens in our rooms during a global pandemic. Where in this performative installation, the artist invites us to dig even deeper into the subconscious and question 'do we even have intimate, private spaces left for our own' and 'where one could find those transgressing links between our reality and beyond' to discover other ways of living side-by-side and together, not only with others but also with ourselves.”

“Nanden He's humorous, yet touching multi-media works employ a variety of mediums, such as interactive sculpture, mixed-media, as well as videolanimation installations. Blending high and low-tech together, she creates Dadaesque, mechanized and animated works which often center around her own self-exploration. He's 'Box Inside my Head Volume l', from 2021, offers a glimpse inside the artist's mind, created at a time of isolation and lockdown throughout the world. A crudely painted face on a cardboard box rests atop a mannequin body. By moving in close and voyeuristically peering through one of the holes cut into the box (the eyes or nostrils of the box's face), we are able to see inside the artist's head and observe - a short animated drawing which reveals an uncomfortable looking, crouching figure, whose hair seems to take over the body. Also included are a few miniature items, attributes of the troubled artist - an open book, a bottle of Absolut vodka and a mobile phone, among other sacred items. He's personal story becomes a universal one as she touches on emotions and needs we all experienced during the period of isolation experienced during lockdown.”
