Funded Art Residencies to Know About


Art residencies come in a variety of formats, with programs offering different resources, facilities, durations and structures. But because funded opportunities are important for artists and can be hard to find, in this list we’ve decided to focus on those in particular. Here are some funded art residencies to know about.

1. Camargo Foundation

Located in Cassis, France, the Camargo Foundation has been awarding residencies since 1971. The foundation hosts a core residency program each year. And it has organized a further residency program for African-American and African playwrights, and a program focused on artistic engagement with the natural environment, among a number of partnership programs. Its core program is open to artists internationally, supporting research, experimentation, and interdisciplinary approaches. Through 6-11 week residency fellowships, artists and researchers are provided time and space to focus on their work and engage with others. Fellows also receive 250 USD per week, as well as funding for basic transportation to and from Cassis.


2. Akademie Schloss Solitude

Akademie Schloss Solitude is an international residency program located just outside of Stuttgart, Germany. Established in 1990, the program is designed to offer time and space for young artists to work and research free from the pressures and distractions of everyday life. The Akademie provides residents with a fully equipped living/working studio, a monthly fellowship grant of € 1,200, and covers travel expenses for arrival and departure to the program.


3. Berlin-Lagos Residency

This residency program is cooperatively run and organized by institutions in Berlin and Lagos to facilitate an exchange between the two cities. Towards this aim, artists and curators from Lagos and Berlin are able to live and work in the other location for a period of time, receiving support and access to local networks. The residency program covers accommodation and studio in Lagos or Berlin, flight costs Berlin-Lagos/Lagos-Berlin, visa fee, and per diems.  It is organized by the Goethe-Institut Nigeria in cooperation with 16/16 residency in Lagos and ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics and SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin.

The residencies usually take place in autumn, with open calls issued earlier in the year. But each of the organizing institutions has a full program of exciting events and opportunities throughout the year. 4. IPRC BI/POC Artist & Writer Residency

The Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) in Portland, Oregon offers support, tools, and resources for the independent art and literary publishing community. The center runs print workshops, a certificate program, summer youth camps, and more. In 2019, IPRC initiated a residency program to support Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) artists and writers in the Portland Metro Area. Residents are provided time, a $3,000 stipend, staff and community support, as well as access to the studio, facilities, and equipment on site. As housing is not provided by IPRC, the residencies are primarily available to Portland-based artists and writers.


5. Tusen Takk Artist Residency

Tusen Takk Foundation is a new independent non-profit organization in Leland, Michigan. The foundation seeks to give artists, writers, and composers solitary time and space to work on current projects or explore new directions in their work. Three- to twelve-week residencies are available to emerging and established artists. The residency provides an honorarium of $625/week, as well as housing, access to facilities, staff, resources, and the organization’s network.

6. INTERGENERATIONAL LGBT ARTIST RESIDENCY

The INTERGENERATIONAL LGBT ARTIST RESIDENCY (ILGBTAR) is a program for LGBTQ2+ visual artists in Canada. It takes place on Toronto Island at the artist retreat centre Artscape Gibraltar Point. The two-week residency offers studio space, travel support, a food stipend, and free room and board. And it’s open to established and emerging LGBTQ2+ artists of any age residing in Canada.


7. Black Rock Senegal

Black Rock Senegal residency program was initiated and developed by artist Kehinde Wiley. Resident artists, writers, and filmmakers are invited to live and work onsite at Black Rock in Dakar for one to three months, joining Wiley at his studio. The residency offers room and board, as well as individual studio space and a modest stipend for incidentals and additional art supplies. In addition, Black Rock organizes and provides funding for travel within Senegal, with further travel expenses arranged on a case-by-case basis.

8. Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale

Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale (NKD) in Norway arranges workshops, seminars, and exhibitions, as well as an international residency program. The program is designed to provide artists and curators time and space to focus on their work. A residency at NKD includes a monthly grant of NOK 10,000, up to NOK 5,000 to cover travel costs, free living and working spaces, and access to facilities and equipment. Two- to four-month residencies are available for visual artists, designers and architects. And curators can apply for a one-month residency.

9. Artistes en Résidence

Founded in 2011, Artistes en Résidence is located in downtown Clermont-Ferrand in France. Its programs are designed to support visual artists by providing work space, accommodation, and financial assistance. Among their various programs is the Intramuros Residency – 100 Days. As the name suggests, this program offers a residency onsite for 100 days. To offer flexibility, residents are able to divide their 100 days into multiple shorter stays in Clermont-Ferrand throughout the year.
