Art-Science is a an exciting and growing interdisciplinary field. On one hand, collaborations between artists and scientists lead to valuable insight and exchange of knowledge between both sectors. On the other, the role of artists in providing creative approaches to pressing issues of our time - such as climate change - is becoming increasingly emphasized. At ArtConnect, we believe that artists play a vital role in shaping our future. Therefore, we have gathered this list of outstanding opportunities for art-science projects.


WaterLANDS | Residency in 6 Countries

WaterLANDS is a €23.6 million, 5-year EU Green Deal funded project that aims to restore wetland sites across Europe which have been damaged by human activity and to lay the foundations for protection across larger areas. One artist will be identified to engage with each natural site across Europe intermittently over a period of 4 years, reflecting on the process of environmental restoration.

Location: Estonia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, UK &, Bulgaria

Rewards: Accommodation, meals and performance in Mexico City, Mexico

British Mycological Society | Grant for Artists Interested in Fungi

The mission of the British Mycological Society is to promote fungal science. While they are a research-focused organization, they also recognize the role of art in inspiring fascinating interactions and dialogues around mycology. Therefore, their Massee Arts Grant provides funding to artists whose work encourages people from all sectors and walks of life to recognize the beauty of the fungal world.

Rewards: Up to £5,000 project grant

The Arctic Circle | Art & Science Expedition

The Arctic Circle expeditionary residency program invites international artists, scientists, educators and innovators to live and work on-board an Arctic-class Tall Ship while sailing the waters of the international territory of Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago just 10 degrees latitude from the North Pole. The program does cost $7,200 USD, however we decided to include it in this collection as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Location: Svalbard

Fee: $7,200 USD (subsidized)

Rewards: Accommodation, full service on board and opportunity to sail in Arctic waters

Science World in Vancouver, Canada has space available throughout the year to display artwork that promotes wonder and dreams through science and nature. They are particularly on the lookout for 2D and 3D works, digital art, as well as performance and time-based work.

RIXC | Science & Techno-Ecologies Residencies for Nordic and Baltic Artists

RIXC’s residency program is aimed at Baltic and Nordic artists whose work sits at the intersection between art, science and techno-ecologies. The residencies last for two months and include a trip and short-stay visits to RIXC’s rural site and their partner location – at the Irbene Radiotelescope. 

Location: Riga, Latvia

Rewards: €3,000 stipend, travel, accommodation, production and exhibition
