Virtual Residencies You Should Know About

Virtual residencies are of particularly high relevance right now. But we noticed a rise in web-based residencies even before the pandemic. Not only are they accessible to more people, but they can also offer a worldwide reach. Here is a list of virtual residencies you should know about.

GlogauAIR (on-line Program)

GlogauAIR is a non-profit art space and residency created in 2006 by Chema Alvargonzalez and nowadays supported by Memoria Artística Chema Alvargonzalez, in Kreuzberg, Berlin. The residency is located in a historic, modernist-style building that was originally designed to be a school. The building was one of the first projects erected by architect Ludwig Hoffmann in 1896, during his time as the Building Advisor of Berlin.

Focused on the principles of exploring, creating, and exhibiting, the residency offers an on-site and on-line program for international artists of all fields.

Artists in GlogauAIR’s on-site Residency Program live and work in one of thirteen studios. They receive curatorial and technical support, as well as a diverse program that aims to help them in their professional careers; encouraging not only the development of the artist’s work but also the opportunity to share ideas and opinions with the other artists.

Through the on-line Program, the artist has the opportunity to receive curatorial support, regular group meetings, talks by experts, and workshops, from their homes or personal studios located anywhere in the world. This on-line program was set up as a result of the challenges faced in 2020. Far from letting this stop us, we expanded our program to make it available for artists who can’t join us physically in Berlin.

Cel del Nord Virtual Residency

“Join the stay-at-home revolution,” Cel del Nord proclaims on their homepage. They welcome six artists of any discipline to take part in their week-long virtual residency, with the purpose to motivate and support the artists as they work from home. It’s a donation-based operation where the artists pay as much, or little, as they can.

Akademie Schloss Solitude Web Residency

Since 2017, Akademie Schloss Solitude has held web residencies in cooperation with ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe three times a year. For each call, a curator selects four project proposals, whose creators are rewarded with a four-week residency and 750 USD. Artists are invited to experiment with digital technologies and new art forms and reflect on the topics set by the curators. Keep an eye out on their platform for new calls.

BONFIRE

BONFIRE is a proposal made by artists for artists, unfolding a diverse program of online artist residencies and personal art advisory. Currently the offer includes two types of programs with different duration, objectives and levels of engagement. The main program, under the same name as the platform: BONFIRE, and a shorter and more spontaneous proposal called WALK & TALK.

SomoS Berlin (Virtual Artist Residency)

SomoS Berlin Virtual Artist Residency is an empowering 3-month online experience that seeks to positively accompany the participating artist’s work progress, providing input, mentoring, support and visibility while creating a stimulating and friendly professional community. The online residency is a dedicated productive joint process that will help the artist to focus on their strengths.

While the Virtual Artist Residency is an online experience, it is still infused with a localized sense of the Berlin art scene and of SomoS’ curatorial focus. This is done by integrating Berlin-based art professionals such as artists, critics, gallerists, writers, curators, while building upon the existing theme complex of SomoS’ exhibitions and art projects, dedicated to dialogue, challenging assumptions, and representing diverse standpoints.

WOC (Online Artist Residency)

WOC Online Residency is a way to reconnect with the international art community, provoke creative exchange, and expand your art practice through feedback and mutual support.

The focus is on connecting artists and building new networks between them, through dialogue and experimentation. The participants are able to work on specific projects, improve their portfolios, and move on when they feel stuck and need help.

Through active dialogue, exchanging ideas, and critical thinking, the program builds a strong sense of community and artistic collaboration among its participants which lasts after the program ends.

In a friendly and supportive atmosphere, WOC helps artists to continue growing, experimenting and improving themselves as artists.
