This list highlights 5 of the best open calls out there right now for underrepresented curators to gain access to funding and resources so they can be recognized for their talent and passion.


New Curators | Training for People from Lower Socio-Economic Backgrounds

Based in London, New Curators is a paid twelve-month curatorial training program for people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. New Curators responds to the elitism and lack of diversity that unfortunately still persists in the world of curating by granting participants a living wage, not to mention an exciting program with international network development opportunities.

Hunna Art | Call for Projects Presenting Women from the Gulf Region

Founded in 2021, Hunna Art represents women contemporary artists based in the Arabian Peninsula. Their open call aims to support projects anywhere in the world that include at least one artist that they represent. From publications to exhibitions to performances, the exact format of the project is open to interpretation - with experimentation encouraged!

MARKK | Research Fellowship for African Curators

The Museum am Rothenbaum- World Cultures and Arts (MARKK) in Hamburg, Germany is offering a two-year fellowship for African curators or scholars from April 2023. The fellowship aims to support the act of decolonizing four German museums that hold African collections, including many objects looted during colonial times. Selected curators or scholars will receive significant funding to produce projects that push beyond Eurocentric perspectives.

Location: Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart and Saxony, Germany

Rewards: €2,875 per month, €25,000 exhibition budget, €6,000 for research in Africa and €2,000 travel budget

BronxArtSpace | Call for Curators - Emerging Voices in the Bronx, New York

BronxArtSpace invites applicants with a strong connection to the Bronx to submit proposals for a group exhibition to be presented in April-May, 2023. Thematically, the call is wide open. However, at least half of the exhibited artists should be living in the Bronx, and there is a particular interest in applications that further BronxArtSpace’s commitment to diversity, as well as applications from emerging curators.

Rewards: $500 honorarium, $1,000 budget split between curators and exhibition

Casa Árabe / PHotoESPAÑA | Photography Exhibition on Arabic Societies & the Environment

Casa Árabe and PHotoESPAÑA Festival are collaborating for a third time to present NUR نور (Light) , a call for proposals for a photography exhibition. These two organizations are looking for curators or institutions to present an exhibition that lies at the intersection of Arab societies and questions of the environment and sustainability.
